Speight throws 3 TDs, No. 7 Michigan routs Hawaii 63-3
One question that had yet to be answered this Summer was who would take the reigns of the Wolverines offense as Harbaugh chose to go with redshirt sophomore Wilton Speight over senior transfer John O’Korn.
It was Michigan’s largest margin of victory since beating Northwestern, 69-0, in 1975.
Ann Arbor Police Sgt. Amy Metzer said there were no major incidents to report following the game.
Harbaugh had reason to be beaming about Speight’s resolve as a result, because not only did he lead the Wolverines to a touchdown on their next drive, but he did so on Michigan’s next three possessions.
Harbaugh refused to reveal who will start at quarterback, but he is expected to go with Wilton Speight ahead of Houston transfer John O’Korn.
“We have a pretty tough road schedule, but I really think we can get it done”, Wormley said. They played the Cal Golden Bears in Australia, and lost 51-31.
Hawaii, on the other hand, is getting an encore season opener, once more doing so away from Honolulu. Another interception return for a touchdown, this time by Channing Stribling made it 49-0 and put the exclamation on a dominant defensive performance.
“I knew Chris Evans was special”, Harbaugh said.
HAWAII: The Rainbows simply looked as exhausted as they were overmatched, and they had an excuse.
“That’s the hand we were dealt and we had to look at it as an opportunity”, first-year Hawaii head coach Nick Rolovich said.
“This has taken on a life of its own – I need to watch what I say, I think”, he said on ESPN Radio’s “Russillo and Kanell” show (via the Detroit Free Press).
Emergency medical personnel treated 74 people, 11 of whom were taken to the U-M emergency department, Brown said.
MI should be one of the most dynamic college football teams to watch this season.
In the fourth quarter Hawaii was able to get on the scoreboard with Rigoberto Sanchez hitting a 55 yard field goal making the game 56-3. He’s a bright spot for us.
HAWAII: The Rainbows, mercifully, will get to stay home to host Tennessee Martin.
Michigan wide receiver Grant Perry (9) celebrates scoring a touchdown in the first quarter of an NCAA college football game against Hawaii at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich., Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016. The Wolverines won’t play on the road until October 8 at Rutgers. As Hawai’i had its field-goal unit on the field to kick a 26-yard field goal with two seconds left in the first half, officials threw a flag and determined on the previous play it was intentional grounding on Hawai’i quarterback Ikaika Woolsey when he threw the ball out of bounds in the pocket to escape a sack. Since it was a 10-second runoff on the clock for an illegal pass in the final minute, the half ended and Hawaii never attempted the field goal. Jehu Chesson hauled in three passes for 43 yards; Darboh finished with three for 42 and a touchdown.
