Spieth claims second Open
Jordan Spieth has a way of hanging around, even when he’s not at his best.
After a three-way playoff with Australians Ashley Hall, Cameron Smith, Jordan Spieth has been crowned the 2016 Emirates Australian Open champion. “You can trust anything, there’s no nerves, you’ve already closed it out”.
Spieth, the 2014 victor of this event who was T-2 here previous year, made four birdies and had just one bogey during his round.
“A year ago I was missing the hole by a foot and it’s been getting closer and closer to going in”, he said.
More to come shortly. “I had a chance previous year on 18 and didn’t hit a great putt and this time I had that same chance with a very similar putt in the play off and capitalised, so drew back a little on that and said, this is our time to close this one out”.
And it’s a golfing beat Australians are happy to dance along with, too.
Scott got an early chance to make up for his disappointing opening round of 73 but only hit his considerable stride on the back nine, where he picked up four birdies as well as an eagle courtesy of a brilliant four-iron approach shot at his 16th hole.
“He’s been on the bag for the past year and we work really well together”, Fox said.
Ogilvy has used a one time only career money list exemption to play the United States circuit this year and after a good showing in Las Vegas two weeks ago has made a good start to regaining his playing privileges.
“So, I’m just going to be more aggressive on the greens tomorrow, now that I feel more comfortable”.
“We love coming here, certainly plan on it.it’s hard to tell”, he added.
Living up to his superstar status, Spieth recovered from a four-shot deficit mid-round to lift the Stonehaven Cup for the second time in a thrilling three-man sudden-death playoff on Sunday.
“After being one over through the first five holes and really being all over the golf course, I really could have been three or four over at that point and turned it around into a four-under round, so I’m very pleased with being at nine under”, Spieth said.
American Jordan Spieth remained in strong contention after two rounds, shooting 70 to be in a tie for ninth place at 5 under.
But so personable is Spieth and so intense the Sunday drama that unfolded that the lack of class in the field barely rated a mention.
“It’s a fantastic list to join”, he said.
“And then we made the putts at the very end that mattered”. Just got my head down and finished well. At the next, Ogilvy drove into the trees and his pitch out only went 10 metres forward – where it landed behind a tree that meant he had no swing.
