Spieth, Johnson together at St. Andrews
Certainly there are golf psychologists who would applaud Johnson’s grasp of golf as a mind game.
Have you ever played one-week fantasy leagues?
But Johnson’s old gremlins appeared once again on the 14th, when his second shot flew out of bounds and he eventually ran up a double-bogey seven.
Jordan Spieth of the United States walks to the second tee during a practice round at St Andrews Golf Club prior to the start of the British Open Golf Championship, in St. Andrews, Scotland, Monday, July 13, 2015.
In the 2011 Open Championship at Royal St. Georges, Johnson hit his second shot to the 14th green in the final round out-of-bounds.
“I think it’s hands down the coolest venue for the Open Championship”, Andy North said on an ESPN conference call with reporters last week. “I drop golf and drop everything I do to be with them”.
Johnson and Paulina Gretzky have been a couple since 2013 and though they’ve had a child together, haven’t yet tied the knot. He three-putted for par, and Spieth was halfway home to the Grand Slam.
The 39-year-old said his preference was for there to be wind during the tournament. “It gives me the confidence to know I have what it takes to win”. “But it was time to get out of there. I had had enough, I was ready to go”. I was ready to go.
“I can’t comment on what he (Spieth) needs to do for him to play his best”.
Adding insult to injury the bad lads of the R&A have paired Johnson with Spieth (and Hideki Matsuyama) for the first two rounds. That way you can be maybe a little more aggressive than you would normally be starting a Major Championship.
No one played better tee to green than Johnson at Chambers Bay. “It was nice”.
It is impossible to look beyond the world number two, who is trying to claim the third leg of an unprecedented calendar grand slam following victories in the Masters and US Open.
Spieth heads to The Open with momentum on his side after winning the John Deere Classic on Sunday.
But if he needed a reminder of how close he came to winning his first major title at Chambers Bay, he won’t have to look far Thursday at the British Open.
“I’ve got plenty in the tank”, the 21-year-old Spieth said after becoming the eighth PGA Tour player in the past 25 years to win four or more times in a season. “It was just part of it. The greens weren’t rolling that great”.
“I hit two great shots, and unfortunately my ball – I don’t know how it stayed where it did, above the hole up there, but unfortunately it stayed there, and it was just a tough putt”.
And after taking time away from the game past year, there were doubts about how he would come back. “It definitely helps the more times you play it to know the bounces and where to land the ball to get to certain flags and certain pins, where you want to be at in the fairway”.
Of course, this experience is nothing like that quick spin around St. Andrews with his U.S. Walker Cup teammates. Johnson doesn’t think he’s going to need any. To see who I’m picking in my lineup, check out two of my personal DraftKings lineups on the final slide of this post.
