Spieth’s superb finish earn him the Open and his third Major
As defending champion, Spieth could not simply leave Augusta National as soon as possible following his nightmare round.
Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, the three surviving members of the “grand slam club” who have won all four majors, saluted the 23-year-old who will join them if he comes out on top at next month’s US PGA Championship.
So naturally, Brady had to weigh in on Spieth’s latest achievement.
Matt Kuchar played an incredible four rounds at Royal Birkdale; he actually had the lead over Spieth as they stood on the 13th tee box, which is where the deal went down.
The ensuing delay while he worked out a place to take a penalty drop on the adjacent practice range appeared all-too-similar to Spieth’s public unraveling on Augusta’s 12th hole when he twice found water to blow the lead a year ago.
That lengthy delay, coupled with Spieth’s subsequent best-ever finish in the event’s history, will long be a talking point as, of course, will Branden Grace’s feat in becoming the first player to card a 62 in a men’s major with his stunning Saturday effort.
“All of the sudden, the lid came off”, Spieth said, referring to an imaginary cover over the hole. When asked about ties to the Open, he mentioned that he’s good friends with and plays plenty of golf with former champion Todd Hamilton.
Spieth, who had blown his drive way right, apologised to Kuchar for taking so long over his shot to the green. That is remarkable. He will turn 24 years old on Thursday and he certainly has dozens more victories and who knows how many major championships in front of him. Spieth with the three majors seems to be full speed ahead.
“And I thought, well then, that’s a much better location for me to hit the next shot because I can get it much closer to the green, and it saves me nearly a full stroke from going back to the tee”, said Spieth.
Every time I add it up that translates to five-under for Spieth over the final five holes.
As good as it gets in golf.
Three down, one to go for Jordan Spieth. “That’s the best athlete golfer I’ve ever witnessed”.
Today’s win was anything but the dawdle that some had predicted, although it ended with the same three-shot margin over Kuchar that he had started with on Sunday.
Kuchar closed with a 69 and did nothing wrong.
But after that he could not put a foot wrong or hit a shot bad.
“After I struck it, I didn’t like it because it wasn’t where we were trying to hit it”, Spieth said.
“When that putt went in, I was really, really obviously excited”, Spieth said.
Currently, headline selection Jordan Spieth is a 2/7 chance to close out his third major win – and if he doesn’t, we’ve got two big chances among the chasing pack.
