Spike Jonze debuts wild perfume ad starring Margaret Qualley
The almost four-minute clip features former dancer and actress Margaret Qualley from The Leftovers performing an outrageous dance routine which you have to see to believe.
You may know Qualley from her roles in The Leftovers or The Nice Guys. Margaret (yes, she’s Andie MacDowell’s daughter) then lets loose, working herself into a wild, insane and entirely joyful frenzy. Assassin, is strongly reminiscent of the video for Weapon Of Choice by Fatboy Slim, which features Christopher Walken mucking about in a similar setting.
Whether the performer is Bjork or Christopher Walken or even himself, Spike Jonze has committed some incredible dance scenes to film.
The Ryan Hueffington choreographed dance shows Qualley fighting against something that has taken control of her body as she fires lasers out of her hands and knocks out a rogue guest who happens to be in the way, not quite the frothy romance of a classic perfume ad.
“This will go down as perhaps the most unexpectedly off-the-rails” of all the ads Jonze has ever directed, declares Collider.
“When we think about perfume campaigns, we think about a pretty girl with a bottle”.
While Jonze’s film may start off in typical fashion ad vein – with the camera trained on a lovely woman at an exclusive event filled with the most privileged of society – things very quickly take a turn for the odd and the joyful. “It’s very multi-faceted and different; it takes the spectator by surprise”.
