Spokesman: Depression may have led to TN killings
The correct spelling of the gunman’s name was still in dispute, with federal officials and records giving at least four variations.
The shootings have increased concern about security at recruiting facilities that are open to the public and where service personnel are not armed. However, in light of the Chattanooga shootings, Haslam has asked that alternatives be considered to make the process quicker and easier for military personnel to obtain permits.
Abdulazeez graduated from Red Bank High School near Chattanooga and earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
The official said that investigators were especially interested in Abdulazeez’s trip to Jordan and were trying to determine whom he met with, what he did and whether he might have gone or tried to go anywhere else. “It grieves us beyond belief to know that his pain found its expression in this heinous act of violence”.
Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez, the man who killed five people at two USA military facilities in Chattanooga, Tennessee last week, was critical of tactics employed by the Islamic State militant group, his friend said Monday.
Issa said he had not spoken to Abdulazeez since that call.
Abdulazeez’s only known brush with the law was in April when he was arrested for driving under the influence a term which includes alcohol or drug use. But among the things that are being looked at was Abdulazeez losing his job at an Ohio power plant after 10 days in 2013.
The representative, who spoke Sunday on condition of anonymity to avoid unwanted publicity, said 24-year-old Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez also fought drug and alcohol abuse, spending time in Jordan a year ago to help clean himself up. He also was dealing with serious money issues, as he owed thousands and had contemplated a bankruptcy filing, the rep said. The family representative told ABC News that Abdulazeez rented a silver Mustang on Tuesday, showed up at the local mosque and then took a friend on a “joy ride” until 3 a.m. He didn’t sleep at his parents’ home the next two nights and now, authorities are working to retrace his steps.
“He was medicated like many children are”.
Federal Bureau of Investigation spokesman, Special Agent Jason Pack, said Saturday that no arrests have been made in the case. “We thank you that the people of God have come together, and we will pray like we have never prayed before….”
In Chattanooga on Sunday, Paula Proxmire was surrounded by screaming street preachers, mad protesters and unsettled mourners who had just arrived from church.
The gunman killed four Marines and a sailor during an attack on two military facilities Thursday. She brushed back a strand of sweat-soaked hair and sobbed.
The ceremony, which began with the call of “We are Chattanooga strong!”, ended with the congregation linking hands and the Olivet Baptist Church gospel choir, dressed in long purple robes, swaying and clapping hands as they sang. The agitated crowd, many of them carrying holstered pistols, wanted to know why President Barack Obama’s administration and the military weren’t doing more to kill Islamist extremists in Iraq, in Syria or wherever they might be.
According to CNN, U.S. Attorney Bill Killian said the shootings are being investigated as an “act of domestic terrorism”. Agencies suspect there was a probability that he was radicalized during this visit to the Middle East.
One-off attacks are incredibly hard to detect and stop, officials said.
Neighbors recalled stories about a man who played with the neighborhood kids growing up and gave a lift to a neighbor who became stranded in a snowstorm.
Although some reports indicate Abdulazeez returned from Jordan sober, he reverted to his old ways. Some close relatives learned of the charge only days before the shooting, the person said. His wife posted about his death on Facebook. “But it is unfathomable that they should be vulnerable for attack in our own communities”.
