Spot fixing verdict: IPL Governing Council to meet on July 19
Lodha also banned Srinivasan’s son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan from cricket-related activities for life after he was convicted of betting almost $100,000 on matches.
Strongly criticising Meiyappan and Kundra for placing bets and getting involved with bookies, the panel said they had also brought disrepute to their teams as well as to BCCI.
Justice Lodha said both Chennai and Rajasthan were equally at fault for letting Meiyappan and Kundra carry on with their corrupt activities and never reporting to the BCCI’s anti-corruption unit.
Among the franchises, the initial sense was that both would appeal against the decision, though the sheer composition of this committee — Lodha is a former Chief Justice of India and Ashok Bhan and RV Raveendran are retired judges of the Supreme Court — suggests any court would be wary of overturning the decision.
Wednesday, July 15, 2015 – New Delhi-Former Indian Premier League champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) have been suspended from the tournament for two years after team officials were found guilty of illegally betting on matches by a Supreme Court-appointed panel on Tuesday.
Be it the former Commissioner Lalit Modi’s alleged involvement in money laundering or the inappropriate ways used by him to award franchise licenses to some of the new teams, IPL has been one of the most talked about T20 cricket leagues in the world but mostly for all the wrong reasons.
The 75-year-old Dalmiya might be replaced at the Indian cricket board’s Annul General Meeting in September. If Srinivasan is anxious about saving his chairmanship of the global Cricket Council (ICC), the players are waiting to see what will be their fate in the changed circumstances. It means that the team can’t play in the League, and the franchisee is not allowed to bring in sponsorships or anything to do with the franchise.
“It is for the BCCI to consider terminating the teams and the Supreme Court judgment is clear on that”.
“Every organisation needs a review… the BCCI need to look at how they will be able to give the cricket followers in India the confidence that the game is in good hands”, he told India’s NDTV network.
IPL spot fixing: Gurunath Meiyappan and Raj Kundra, owners of the Chennai and Rajasthan franchises respectively have been banned for life. Justice Lodha explained why such stern action was taken.
The Super Kings have reached four finals, winning in 2010 and 2011, whilst The Royals won the inaugural tournament in 2008.
Another senior CSK official, meanwhile, said after the verdict the franchise never expected to go “scot-free”.
The global cricket players’ union says the future credibility of the Indian Premier League could be hurt if it doesn’t help those inadvertently affected by a betting scandal.
“Conflict of interest questions have been raised, once we complete the process of interacting with all the stakeholders, we will take a view on that”.
