Sprint, Verizon Users Have Days Left to Get Cramming Refunds
Time is running out for you to file a claim related to a multi-million settlement the companies announced earlier this year. The illegal practice is known as “cramming”, and leads to unauthorized charges for customers.
If you have unauthorized charges on your bills, both Sprint and Verizon have settlement websites where you can request a full refund.
Verizon and Sprint may owe customers a late Christmas present in the form of a cash refund but if you want to get that present you have to move fast.
Sprint said that current and former prepaid customers (Virgin Mobile, Boost Mobile, Sprint Prepaid, and Assurance Wireless) are eligible for a one-time refund of $7.00.
The settlements which Verizon and Sprint had worked out to settle “mobile cramming” charges underscored the most recent US-wide effort by the attorneys general of all 50 states and the District of Columbia, the Federal Communications Commission, the Federal Trade Commission, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, to curb the “mobile cramming” practice followed by wireless carriers. According to the complaint, Sprint “charged its customers by creating a billing and payment-processing system that gave third parties virtually unfettered access to its customers’ accounts” and Sprint “automatically enrolled its customers in its third-party billing system without their knowledge”.
Both companies claim that they attempted to right their wrongs before being forced to do so by the government.
And a statement from Sprint claims that the company “returned tens of millions of dollars long before the government initiated its investigation of our industry”.
