Spurs acquire Ray McCallum from Kings
The latest move was struck on Thursday morning, when the Spurs swung a deal with the Sacramento Kings by acquiring back-up point guard Ray McCallum in exchange for a future second round pick. McCallum will bring athleticism and youth to the Spurs.
The San Antonio Spurs have won the offseason, according to many in the basketball world. Once Danny Green, Kawhi Leonard, Manu Ginobili and David West are signed, the roster will be up to 11.
The Spurs renounced the rights to Joseph to clear cap space for prized free agent LaMarcus Aldridge, who announced on July 4th that he is leaving Portland to play in San Antonio. He will join a point guard rotation of Patty Mills and starter Tony Parker and get a chance to add an National Basteball Association title to his Horizon League tournament championship as a sophomore at UDM.
Joseph came to terms on a new deal earlier this week with the Toronto Raptors. Popovich is one of the best National Basteball Association coaches of all-time, and he will help McCallum take the next step and could unlock his full potential within the next season or two.
McCallum was a second-round pick (36th overall) by the Kings out of Detroit in 2013. You could do much worse than seven points in 20 minutes per game from a young backup point guard.
Last season with the Kings, McCallum ended up playing in 68 games and started in 30 of those appearances.
