Spy chief hacked by same group that struck Central Intelligence Agency head
Personal email and other accounts connected to Director of National Intelligence James Clapper were hacked, according to a report by the Associated Press, which cited an intelligence official.
The hacker also claimed to have accessed Clapper’s wife’s personal email account.
The hacker allegedly accessed Clapper’s Verizon account so that calls to the director would be forwarded to the Free Palestine Movement.
At the time, the collective said the hacks had been done in support of the Palestinian cause, and emails lifted from Mr. Brennan’s personal account were subsequently provided to and published by WikiLeaks.
A spokesman said the matter had been “reported to the appropriate authorities”, but declined to say more.
The hacker provided phone numbers belonging to either Clapper or his wife, Susan, to Motherboard.
“I’m pretty sure they don’t even know they’ve been hacked”, Cracka said, in an online chat with Motherboard.
A similar explanation was given to Motherboard for the Clapper incident.
When asked why he did it, Cracka responded, “I just wanted the gov to know people aren’t f***ing around, people know what they’re doing and people don’t agree #FreePalestine”.
“And in a separate tweet, “Cracka”, using an account that listed him as “@dickreject”, wrote: “@_d34ult when you find out someone has been using your email for 4 days without you knowing”, beneath a photograph of a somber Clapper.
An individual who spoke only on condition of anonymity said that the Office of the Director of National Intelligence was aware of the hacking incident before it was first reported Tuesday by Motherboard, an online magazine and video channel on science and technology.
Meanwhile, security expert Michael Adams, who worked for US Special Operations Command, said it was “insane” that Clapper’s personal information wasn’t concealed better.
Clapper, 74, has been the director of national intelligence since 2010.
