Square Enix’s Kingdom Hearts II.8 Name Explanation Makes No Sense
Well, according to Kingdom Hearts series director Tetsuya Nomura, easily one of the most popular developers in Square Enix‘s stable, the 2.8 designation comes from Dream Drop Distance, Unchained, and Birth by Sleep’s place in the Kingdom Hearts timeline. Let’s attempt to understand it together.
Nomura explained how the HD remake of Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance is worthy of technically being 2.6, following up on 2.5 ReMIX.
Since Kingdom Hearts 0.2 is using the technology that will ultimately power Kingdom Hearts III, the game can not be made available on the PS3, like every other major kingdom Hearts game so far has been- hence the PS4 exclusivity, Nomura explained.
In the interview, Nomura also revealed the meaning behind the “2.8” name.
And certainly, looking at names such as “Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8” and “Kingdom Hearts 0.2” could make people question what’s going on, especially when those titles are split across different platforms. As for “Kingdom Hearts X Back Cover“, Nomura did not include it because Sora did not star in it.
Well, if you get it, leave a comment down below with the answer to the universe’s greatest mathematical problem!
The problem seems to boil down to technological limitations – the game is apparently based on the engine behind “Kingdom Hearts 3” itself, which is not backwards compatible with the PS3.
The game will ship in Japan for the PlayStation 4 in 2016.
Hardcore Gamer considered a “Kingdom Hearts” fatigue because of the long waiting game, adding that it’s “turning out to be nothing more than a goose chase with promises of “coming soon” around every turn”.
Furthermore, more details and release dates for “Kingdom Hearts 3” will be released on November. 6 to 8 this year at the upcoming D23 Expo in Japan. Square Enix hasn’t said it yet, but we wouldn’t be surprised if the release included some new teasers/scenes that prepare players for the story in Kingdom Hearts 3, much like the developer did with Kingdom Hearts Final Mix.
