Squeaky clean Cech eyes another title with Arsenal
Arsene Wenger hailed Mesut Ozil as the best player in the Premier League and an equal of Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp following another influential display in a 2-0 win over Bournemouth.
Arsene Wenger is adamant his Arsenal players have the required characteristics to remain top of the Barclays Premier League table and claim the title.
“Statistics show in eight of the past 11 seasons, the team top on New Year’s Day won the title”.
“We are mature and the most important thing is at the end of the season to know we’ve given everything”.
“The stats show that, but not just that: his work-rate through the game and I see him training every day and what he does for this team.
Only one team has won the league without losing a game and that is Arsenal”, the veteran manager began, as per Goal. He leads the Premier League in assists and is showing the kind of form that prompted Arsenal to shatter their club transfer record to buy him from Real Madrid in 2013.
Otherwise, Wenger intends to rotate his squad again where possible when the Gunners take on struggling Newcastle at the Emirates on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).
“You question our mentality, I don’t”, said Wenger.
“I have already said many times that goalkeeper is maybe the most underrated position in football”, Wenger said. You can not rule us out after 19 games.
“I’m confident we will fight to stay there”.
“Newcastle have had a hard start, but they have had some good performances in away games”, Wenger said. The latest person to join the debate is George Graham, who suggests that his former club can indeed be crowned champions of England by taking advantage of the faltering form of Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United.
– Newcastle failed to muster manage a single shot on target and had just one attempt overall when they played Arsenal at St James’ Park earlier this season.
The Gunners sit at the Barclays Premier League summit but it is only goal difference keeping them ahead of the season’s surprise package Leicester.
