Sri Lanka 288 all out in 2nd ODI vs. Australia
Angelo Mathews led from the front with an all-round display to help Sri Lanka register a comprehensive 82-run win against Australia in the second One-Day International between the two sides on Wednesday (August 24) at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo to level the series at 1-1.
Sri Lanka are now trailing 1-0 in the ODI series following their opening match defeat by three wickets against Steve Smith-led side.
Batting first after winning the toss, Sri Lanka made 288 all out.
The left-arm seamer, 26, dismissed Kusal Perera with the final ball of the 46th over before removing Angelo Mathews and Thisara Perera in the 48th.
Despite making starts, Steven Smith (30) and George Bailey (27) failed to build, with the excellent Amila Aponso (4-18) seeing both off in just his second ODI outing.
There was no resistance down the order as Sri Lanka recorded their biggest victory in runs over Australia, setting them up nicely for Sunday’s third ODI in Dambulla.
The allrounder combined with Mitchell Starc to apply the brakes at the end of the Sri Lanka innings, after Kusal Mendis (69) and Dinesh Chandimal (48) combined to set a strong platform for the hosts.
Faulkner had good reason to celebrate, dismissing Kusal Perera lbw for 54 with a slower ball in the last ball of the 45th over, returning in the 47th over to have Mathews caught in the deep for 57 and clean bowling Thisara Perera for 12 to complete the hat-trick.
Wade soon reached his fifty and along with Travis Head (31), he once again rebuilt the innings with a 64-run partnership.
Wade s 88-ball knock was studded with three boundaries but the wicketkeeper-batsman finally became Thisara Perera s third victim and the Australian resistence wilted.
The pair put quick runs on the board before a triple strike by leg-spinner Adam Zampa checked the hosts’ surge.
Smith will miss the remaining three one-day fixtures and two T20s, vice-captain David Warner will take the reins for the first time.
Mathews, who recorded his 32nd ODI fifty in his 178th match, struck a four and two sixes during his 60-ball stay at the crease.
Zampa returned the best bowling figures for Australia with 3-42.
