Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal shared a solid century stand.
Pakistan have taken the second new ball with Sri Lanka 250-5 in 80 overs, enjoying a lead of 313. But, when he was on 99, trouble struck the other end. First he got Chandimal trapped lbw ending a 117-run partnership. He is technically solid – he credits his English cricketing upbringing for this – and is one of the fittest players in the Pakistan circuit according to a recent PCB fitness test report.
Shortly after he reached the mark, however, Pakistan fast bowler Imran Khan hit back with the second new ball, capturing his maiden five-wicket haul to end Sri Lanka’s innings.
Suranga Lakmal bagged his 50th wicket in Tests by dismissing Shehzad.
Younis’ experience was invaluable in helping a jittery Masood, who had toiled against the shorter ball, and the former’s willingness to seek singles and keep the scoreboard ticking settled the nerves. Masood smacked two gorgeous fours himself the next over from Kaushal who was bowling loose full tosses and half-volleys at that point.
However, Jehan Mubarak and captain Angelo Mathews added 81 runs for the fifth wicket.
Azhar was on 49 and Pakistan still 158 runs behind when he was reprieved by TV umpire Sundaram Ravi after on-field official Paul Reiffel had declared him caught behind off Prasad. It looked out but in the absence of conclusive evidence to overturn the onfield call on whether there was an inside edge, Masood survived. He spent two years there before moving again, to his native country Pakistan.
Sri Lankan coach Marvan Atapattu credited the bowlers for the turnaround after the modest first innings total.
Playing only his fifth test, left-handed Masood brought up his maiden century by hitting off-spinner Tharindu Kaushal for a six and remained not out on 114, which included 11 boundaries.
Younis reached his century in the penultimate ball of the day becoming the first Test batsmen ever to score five centuries in the fourth innings.
The away side headed into the close of play on 230-2, requiring 147 runs to win and still with eight wickets in hand.
No team has chased more than 352 to win a test match in Sri Lanka before.
