The family had just returned from vacation to their home on Sumter Street in northwest Atlanta around 7:30 p.m. Sunday when someone knocked on their door.

According to WSB, the person taken into custody is the suspected gunman depicted in a GBI sketch authorities released earlier this week.

The Atlanta Police Department said Friday that officers arrested 18-year-old Brandon Jerome Smith on charges of armed robbery and aggravated assault, WSB-TV reported.

Police say four teenagers asked to borrow a jack for their vehicle, then tried to force their way inside.

Fighting to protect his wife and two children who were also inside, Michael Lash was shot in the legs as he struggled to close the door.

Police said Whitney grabbed her infant daughter and the suspects fired twice at her and the baby, but missed.

The couple’s 2-year-old son was upstairs asleep and was not harmed. Police are still seeking the other three. “I kept talking to Mr. Lash to keep him conscious until Fire and EMS units arrived on scene”.

Lash was hospitalized and is expected to recover from his injuries.

Another friend has set up a GoFundme account to raise money for Michael’s medical expenses.
