Stampeders cut Redblacks’ lead to 10 at Grey Cup
Ottawa Redblacks general manager Marcel Desjardins was right. But for many of us, no matter.
Given it was the CFL, the bubbly was not Dom Perignon.
Calgary Stampeders quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell (19) walks off the field after losing in overtime to the Ottawa Redblacks in CFL Grey Cup football action Sunday, Nov. 27, 2016, in Toronto.
Stamps head coach Dave Dickenson said he didn’t expect anyone other than Burris to be under centre when the game began.
The two teams met back on Sep.
With the Stampeders clawing back to within three points and with an onside kickoff the only real option for Calgary with 1:38 left, punter Rob Maver lofted a ball toward the left sideline. Had Ottawa lost last night, I wouldn’t look any less fondly on Burris’s Hall of Fame career.
The celebration has been 40 years and several incarnations in the making.
There was plenty of action in the game as well, with a combined 852 passing yards, the most in Grey Cup history.
Ottawa also lifted the trophy in 1925, ’26, ’40, ’51 and ’60. “Calgary beat us in Calgary (48-23 on September 17) but we had a great opportunity to beat them because they were up by eight points in the fourth quarter”.
This time, 41-year-old quarterback Henry Burris improved upon last year’s performance to defeat a team that won 15 times during the regular season.
Things looked bleak for the Stampeders after Henry Burris hit Peterborough, Ont., native Brad Sinopoli with a nine-yard touchdown pass to put Ottawa up by 20.
“It’s unbelievable. It’s nice to know we don’t have to get ready for practice Tuesday”. We got it done.
Burris added: “For all those haters out there, there are organizations who haven’t won a Grey Cup in decades, but ours … I thought I was going to have a heart attack and now I feel great, good, awesome”, said Karen Greenwood-Milne.
Burris made a decision to keep warming up in hopes it would get better.
“But if you don’t like ups and downs and that type of stuff, then football’s not a good profession to be in”. “But I think that’s why everybody loves it”. But on the Sunday they went to Skydome and watched their team win arguably the greatest game in Grey Cup history.
Ottawa converted with a touchdown in overtime.
Midway through the third quarter, the 8-9-1 REDBLACKS seemed to have the game firmly in hand with a 27-7 lead.
“We were banged up”, said Nelson. Unfortunately, Calgary will likely be remembered similar to teams like the aforementioned 1989 Eskimos or 2007 New England Patriots. But they didn’t close it out with a title and that changes how we’ll remember this past season.
“We came back from a deficit”.
As of today, there’s only one description that matters: Three-time Grey Cup champion.
Ottawa receiver Ernest Jackson didn’t drop a ball all season. “Everyone doubted us this week”.
