Standing for Bruce Jenner as he introduces Boy George at concert
The I Am Cait premiere opened with Caitlyn Jenner worrying to the camera about what a tough time many trans people are going through.
You don’t have to admit it, but I know there are those out there, like myself, who were waiting with baited breath to see if Caitlyn would step up and be a true voice for the community, including the thousands of at risk trans youth in this country. What a rich narrative that would have been for “Cait”. “Thank you very much!”. After Caitlyn was greeted with a standing ovation from the crowd as she took to the stage to welcome Boy George and his bandmates. Lastly, Cailtyn met with the family of a young transgender named Kyler, who committed suicide. Jenner – switching vehicles twice to avoid the ever-present paparazzi – also attends a balloon-release ceremony for Kyler on a beach during that trip. “I just hope I get it right”. One of Caitlyn’s goals is to show how coming out as a transgender woman affects her family, through the good and the bad, and she’s particularly concerned about the well-being of her kids.
For Nick Adams, GLAAD’s director of programs, transgender media, the first episode showed promise. “Family members often do struggle with this”. Her powerful words even earned her a standing ovation! Today, gay marriage is the law of the land. I Am Cait won’t single-handedly overhaul ignorance and prejudice about the transgender community. Based on the previews, I Am Cait will do little to squash the idea that Jenner came out not only as a woman, but a “sex babe”.
