Stanford’s Christian McCaffrey named to Heisman Trophy finalist
Stanford’s McCaffrey had 461 all-purpose yards in his team’s 41-22 Pac 12 championship game victory over USC.
On Saturday, Watson will sit front and center with Alabama’s Derrick Henry and Stanford’s Christian McCaffrey as one will be crowned the top player in college football at the Best Buy Theater in New York City. QB Deshaun Watson Watson isn’t just the quarterback of the top-ranked Tigers, college football’s last remaining unbeaten team.
As a high schooler, McCaffrey was a beast, however, college football, especially in Division 1, and especially in the Pac-12, one of the most underrated conferences in the NCAA, was going to be a much more hard game for the son of the former Denver Bronco to dominate.
The 2014 victor of the Heisman was OR quarterback Marcus Mariota. The pure sophomore is from Gainesville, GA.
Wilbon also added, “Race is always a factor and [McCaffrey] would’ve received so much more publicity, McCaffrey, who has an incredible family in history of achievement in sports in America, if he wasn’t white”. Watson finished fourth in the country in total offense generated with 4,399 yards.
Henry led the nation in rushing (1,986) and scored 23 touchdowns despite playing in an offense with an inconsistent passing attack.
McCaffrey’s record-breaking season is made even more special when considering that he started slow.
Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey was named one of three finalists for the Heisman Trophy, which were announced Monday night.
Kirby Smart will continue in his current role as Alabama’s defensive coordinator through the College Football Playoff as he also begins work as Georgia’s coach.
Alabama running back Derrick Henry would be a very worthy victor.
Henry has four 200-yard rushing games and has played his best against the toughest competition, gaining 1,155 yards and 15 touchdowns against top 50 nationally ranked rush defenses with an average of 5.37 yards per carry and 165 yards per game. McCaffrey ran for 1,847 yards, caught for 540, returned 14 punts for 67 yards, returned 36 kickoffs for 1,042, and threw for 39.
McCaffrey’s season total of 3,496 rushing, receiving and return yards is 1,000 more than his closest competitor, San Jose State’s Tyler Ervin. If he wins the award, he would be just the second Stanford’s second player to do so joining Jim Plunkett in 1970.
Meanwhile, Clemson defensive end Shaq Lawson is planning to forego his senior season and enter the 2016 NFL Draft.
LSU running back Leonard Fournette and Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield did not receive a nomination.
Yet he has brushed aside any Heisman Trophy discussion, saying his only goal in on helping his team win championships.
We’ll have to tune in to ESPN on Saturday night to see if Watson’s name is called to join the most elite fraternity in college football.
