Star Trek Beyond wins the weekend box office
Star Trek Beyond blasted off to a $60 million opening while the female-led Ghostbusters reboot fell off a cliff and The Secret Life of Pets continued to dominate in its third weekend at the box office.
If that estimate holds, Pets will have earned around $260 million in its first 17 days, not counting overseas receipts, which will push the film over $300 million this weekend, according to Forbes. It is about $15 million below the original “Star Trek” debut in 2009 and $10 million less than what “Star Trek Into Darkness” premiered with in 2013.
But given the movie reportedly cost nearly $185 million to make, it is going to have to enjoy a very successful run overseas in order for Paramount to have any chance of making their money back.
The Star Trek franchise is still box-office gold.
Finishing second in North American theaters was “The Secret Life of Pets”, a film popular with kids and adults about what dogs do while their owners are at work.
Third place went to Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters, which dropped a staggering 53 percent from last week and earned $21.6 million. Lights Out exceeded all expectations, after costing studio Warner Bros just $5m to make.
While Sony says a sequel is going to happen, you can be sure they will be cutting the budget drastically if it does happen at all. Despite a $105 million production budget, worldwide sales have already pushed the movie well out of the red.
The third new release Ice Age: Collision Course had a disappointing $21 million opening.
The Ice Age franchise is beginning to feel like this decade’s Land Before Time. “Finding Dory”, $7.2 million; 7.
