Star Trek: The Next Generation Enterprise-D VR tour makes it so
The project’s aim is pretty much what it says on the tin – nothing less than to create a full realised, complete rendition of one of the prettiest starship’s ever created for the Trek universe, the Galaxy Class USS Enterprise D, as commanded by Captain Jean Luc Picard in the TV series Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Built in Unreal Engine and totally Oculus compatible, the Enterprise 3D project is the work of one man, Jason, who started building a version of the Enterprise-D in two years ago, and recently ported it over to Unreal Engine 4. They usually are 360 degree panoramic, without actual movement or immersion. It involves a seamless tour of the ship’s entire length where you can walk the all-too-familiar hallways, view space through the screens, fly the shuttlecraft, live as a crew member, explore the communal areas, and visit rooms never seen before even on the show. Due to the show’s limited television budget, the scope, detail, and variety of what the audience could see was restricted.
The company wants to take a modular approach to the ship’s construction, but it assures users that each room of the ship will be accessible and unique in some way. What about the large forward windows on Deck 3? Malls? Markets? Gardens? All these questions will be answered.
Jason has pulled what he needs from multiple sources including HD episodes of the show, production drawings, set blueprints, and official blueprints. “I wanted to be on that ship, experience its wonders”.
The first thing you guys note is that it isn’t particularly photorealistic. He’s only 80 percent done with the exterior modeling and 60 percent done with the first deck. For now, you can enjoy a quick video tour below of what he’s worked on so far, and be sure to visit the project site to find out more about his efforts.
