‘Star Wars’ becomes highest grossing domestic movie ever
“The Force Awakens”, the seventh film in the series and the first since Disney acquired franchise creator Lucasfilm in 2012, has taken in an additional $800 million in global territories, Disney said in a statement Wednesday.
However, to beat Avatar’s worldwide box office record of $2.8 billion, the movie will need to do well in China, where it opens on Saturday.
Disney confirmed the record in a press release, but did not divulge the film’s exact box office as of Wednesday evening. Both Titanic and Avatar have been re-released since those original release numbers, bringing their domestic totals to $658.6 million and $760.5 million respectively.
“Star Wars” is already the fourth-highest grossing movie worldwide, and should pass “Jurassic World” this week.
“The breakneck pace with which The Force Awakens is hitting major box-office milestones is astonishing”, says Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Rentrak. The Force Awakens is No. 4 globally with $1.56 billion.
The Star Wars Monopoly game now on sale features Rey’s fellow lead Finn, played by John Boyega, Luke Skywalker, new baddie Kylo Ren and Darth Vader, who was killed off in 1983’s Return Of The Jedi.
Hasbro previously said that Rey was ignored to prevent fans from finding out that she “takes on Kylo Ren and joins the Rebel Alliance” in The Force Awakens.
The world is changing, and the future is changing along with it. If toy companies not going to keep up with the times, the least they can do is keep up with the movies they’re supposed to be celebrating.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens is in cinemas now… obviously.
