Star Wars Becomes Top Grossing North American Film Ever
Globally, “The Force Awakens” has so far made almost $1.58 billion, Disney said, which means it still has some work to do to overtake “Avatar” ($2.79 billion) or another Cameron blockbuster, “Titanic” ($2.19 billion). Even then, The Force Awakens has blown past Avatar’s domestic box office record at hyper speed, achieving the milestone in just 20 days after release. “Star Wars” had a significant domestic head start on “Avatar” as it set a record for highest grossing opening weekend with almost $248 million in revenue. According to the Yahoo Box Office it is suggested the Star Wars reboot will gross approximately $2.4 billion worldwide.
The James Cameron film took $2.8bn (£1.9bn) across the world, as compared to The Force Awakens worldwide earnings of $1.6bn (£1.09bn) to date. Having only been in theaters for less than a month, however, it will probably be a different story when Star Wars eventually ends its theatrical run. The film also passed $800 million in global box office today. “We feel [fan support] here and it drives us every day, and it will continue to in the very bright future of ‘Star Wars, ‘” the studio said.
In contrast, Box Office Mojo reports that “Avatar” took in a domestic haul of $760.5 million in 238 days of release, a significantly longer time.
“The Force Awakens” is playing everywhere in the world now, except China, the second-largest film market.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens has finally surpassed Avatar’s numbers with less than three weeks after its opening.
Internationally, the Daisy Ridley starrer has garnered $799.1 million for a global total of $1.56 billion.
