‘Star Wars’ Box Office Surpasses ‘Titanic,’ ‘Jurassic World’
Beginning its third week in release Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues to dominate the box office.
It would seem nothing can stop Star Wars: the Force Awakens at the box office as the J.J. Abrams directed film added another $88.3 million to its box office total, more then enough to win the weekend for a third consecutive week. Avatar took 72 days to hit that mark. The Force Awakens also set a new domestic record for the biggest New Year’s Day box office haul with $34.5 million.
Less than a month in, Star Wars is already the seventh highest-grossing film of all time in Germany, not taking inflation into account.
It can even be bigger when it finally launches at the movie theaters in China, which is one of the known countries that have huge influence market for films, in the coming week. And it’s much the same on the global front, with the movie now sitting sixth, but likely to move up to fourth soon, leapfrogging Fast & Furious 7 and Avengers Assemble for the slot. For Star Wars to break that record it will have to contend with the likes of Ride Along 2 (week 5), Kung Fu Panda 3 (week 7), and Deadpool and Zoolander 2 (week 9). It has also made $679.2 million in the worldwide box office. If you are a Star Wars fan, please feel free to comment below.
The Weinstein Company did relatively well after moving up the wide release of “The Hateful Eight” by a week. Leonardo Di Caprio-starrer The Revenant and transgender period drama The Danish Girl, which both open in Germany this week, are unlikely to challenge Star Wars’ position at the top.
Paramount’s “Daddy’s Home”, a comedy about a nerdy stepfather (Will Ferrell) who finds himself outshone by his wife’s first husband (Mark Wahlberg), picked up $29 million in its second weekend, driving the film’s domestic total to $93.7 million.
Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight” finally gets its nationwide release, bringing in an estimated million. The domestic total for this film stands at $29.6 million. After three weeks, the squeaky little rodents have earned $67.3 million.
