‘Star Wars: Force Awakens’ Tops ‘Avatar’ to Become No. 1 Film of
In just 20 days, Disney says Star Wars has earned enough to pass “Avatar’s” $760.5-million lifetime gross.
Both films will also have more chances to go for the record again as well, with three sequels to Avatar in development and the sequel to The Force Awakens already filming. Having only been in theaters for less than a month, however, it will probably be a different story when Star Wars eventually ends its theatrical run.
Earlier this week The Force Awakens was declared the biggest film of 2015 at the United Kingdom box office with the all-time number one record likely to follow. It was reported that The Avengers made $54 million back in 2012 and $105 million for Avatar in 2009, while The Force Awakens only floats around $51 million.
According to the Yahoo Box Office it is suggested the Star Wars reboot will gross approximately $2.4 billion worldwide.
Original trilogy stars Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher reprised their Han Solo and Princess Leia roles alongside younger newcomers, including Daisey Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac.
The total is an unbelievable $758.2 million domestic gross, just $2.3 million short of Avatar’s current record. The seventh offering in the Star Wars franchise, directed by J.J. Abrams, has so far pulled in $1.56 billion. It also holds U.S. records for the biggest opening-Friday/single-day record ($119.1 million), biggest opening weekend ($390.85 million), and fastest to gross $1 billion globally (12 days).
“The Force Awakens”, however, has yet to open in China, the second-largest film market.
There is still a big question: Can The Force Awakens be the first film in North America to reach $1 billion?
