Kylo Ren – played by Adam Driver – is a conflicted villain in the seventh Star Wars installment. What Han doesn’t expect is that Kylo ends up activating his lightsaber and thrusts directly through Han’s chest and his son tells him “thank you” for helping him snuff out the light and ultimately choose the dark side of the Force.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is now out in theaters. Unfortunately, it just comes off as derivitive and leaves you waiting for the next one, not because this one excites you, but because it leaves you unsatisfied.

“The Force Awakens” lives up to the promise and expectation created by the trailers.

But as io9’s Charlie Jane Anders pointed out, over time, the term “broadened until it means ‘any female character who is unrealistically talented or skilled.'” And while Landis and others may counter that their criticisms have nothing to do with gender, it is hard not to notice that these objections are never raised when the same proves to be true of male characters, which it does all the freaking time. J.J. Abrams and co-writer Lawrence Kasdan crafted a screenplay that poses a lot of questions for the Star Wars universe, and while it answers plenty of them, it also leaves a number of major plot points and character details up for discussion. It may largely retrace the steps of the original trilogy, but it matters whose feet are doing the stepping. Anakin is freaking 9 years old in The Phantom Menace, and he blows up an entire Trade Federation flagship by himself.

Landis wasn’t big on the character of Rey, whom he says is a “Mary Sue,” meaning a character written without flaws or one written unrealistically. There, due to various circumstances, he ends up teaming with Rey as they try to get BB-8 back to the Resistance. He is even defeated by Rey, who has had no prior training in the Force, which had clearly been dormant within her. Finn first encounters her getting beat on by a group of thugs, and before he can jump in to save her, she does the job herself. “So, he joined the First Order not because he was completely on the Dark Side, but because he wanted to get close enough to the Supreme Leader to kill him”.

What Kylo Ren needs is an outlet. The two briefly go back and forth, before Rey taps even further into her abilities.

How bad was Kylo Ren?

Huge spoilers for Star Wars: The Force Awakens follow! “We knew we needed to do something f***ing bold”.

“Long before we had this title, the idea of The Force Awakens was that this would become the evolution of not just a hero, but a villain”, the director said. In a story based largely around mysteries of lineage, this has led to one popular theory: That Luke Skywalker is Rey’s father. That was a scene actually filmed, but we took out.

Whereas Darth Vader (SPOILER!!!!), his grandfather on his mother’s side, maintained exquisite control over his dark powers until his final reconciliation with the Force and his son Luke, Ren is not entirely in possession of his own emotions, and it is perhaps the most unintentionally hilarious part of JJ. More than that, it makes her a member of the galaxy’s most powerful Jedi lineage, while suggesting an erstwhile romance for Luke in the 30 years since Return of the Jedi. It also has some NSFW language, so fair warning there, too.

I think there are four main possibilities, but before getting to that, I’d like to address the question itself. Episode VIII is 520 days away, and that seems like forever. It’s exciting to imagine what could potentially come next for her, whatever that may be.
