‘Star Wars’ makers have high hopes for China success
The remake of “Point Break” opened with $10.2 million.
Force Awakens has smashed one record after another since its debut.
On Christmas Day, it grossed more than $765,000, setting the record as the highest-grossing Chinese movie in a single day in Singapore.
At this rate, there’s no saying how high the Star Wars reboot will ultimately fly. The top dog to overcome will be “Avatar”, which had a total box office $2.79 billion.
“Minions” had a worldwide gross of $1.16 billion.
But while Jurassic World had the benefit of record takings in China over the period, The Force Awakens has yet to open there. The look at a stepfather’s attempts to outshine his wife’s stud of a first husband, came in second with a strong $38.8 million from 3,271 theaters. “Daddy’s Home” carries a $50 million budget. Fox co-financed the movie, about the inventor of the Miracle Mop, with Annapurna Pictures.
Slipping to fifth place was “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Road Chip”, with $12.7 million. Either way, that’s the lowest wide opening of Smith’s career. “Joy” took in an estimated $17.5 million this weekend. To date, Big Short has earned $16 million.
It is expected that the movie will continue to amaze theater industries and Disney Studios, making the $4.05-billion Lucasfilm acquisition deal lucrative.
Globally the film earned $529 million in its first weekend (worldwide) – which just happens to be the biggest global debut ever. It was heavily marketed around its time of release, although according to Disney, it belongs to the “expanded universe” as only the original six movies are nowadays considered canon.
Disney’s recently released Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the talk of the town, likely a popular conversation topic this Christmas. With nearly $40 million in box office receipts, unfortunately you can be sure we haven’t seen the last of Alvin and his crew. But what was unexpected is Sony offering a pre-order of the movie in Digital HD for just $14.99 at the PlayStation Store. Fox and New Regency are partners on the movie, which expands nationwide January 8.
