Star Wars Monopoly Fans Ask: ‘Where’s Rey?’
Other Star Wars toys also failed to include Rey, such as a model of the Millennium Falcon spaceship she pilots and maintains with Chewbacca.
Yesterday we brought you the story of Rey, the lead character of Star Wars: The Force Awakens being nearly completely absent from official merchandise relating to the film.
Responding to the outrage, Hasbro explained that they feared putting Rey into their game would reveal the extent to which she is featured in the film and potentially spoil the title for fans.
This version of the classic board game features four player tokens representing John Boyega’s Finn, Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker, Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren and Darth Vader (who died in Return of the Jedi in 1983!), despite Ray’s central role in the JJ Abrams’ film.
The outcry led to the Twitter hashtag #WheresRey.
“We love your passion for Rey, and are happy to share that we will be including her in the Monopoly: Star Wars game, available this year”. It is not yet known which character Rey will be replacing in the updated set, though Hasbro have said it will happen “later this year”.
The latest toy brand to get under fire for excluding the character, played by Daisy Ridley, is Hasbro’s Monopoly.
“We are thrilled with the popularity of this compelling character and will continue to look for ways to showcase Rey across all of our product lines”, the spokesperson added.
The company says that the Jakku scavenger already features in other Star Wars games including Hands Down, Guess Who and Chess.
In related news, Abrams’ film overtook 2012’s The Avengers on Tuesday to become the fourth-highest-grossing movie of all time at the global box office with $1.54bn in receipts.
