‘Star Wars’ Monopoly to include Rey after girl complains
They’ve backtracked slightly, however, on this justification tweeting that they loved the fan “passion” for Rey and have now made a decision to include her in the game later this year, now that that undisclosed period of spoiler revelation etiquette it was critical they abide by has officially ended.
Hasbro said that Rey was left out as to not spoil the fact that she would join the Rebel Alliance in The Force Awakens. “And without her, the bad guys would’ve won!”
The current version of the Monopoly game has the characters of Finn, Kylo Ren, and old favorites like Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader.
This is not the first time that movie tie-in merchandising from a major blockbuster has conspicuously left out female characters, although it’s one of the first time a fan movement like this has led to such noticeable results.
A young girl has put game maker Hasbro in its place after she penned a letter to the company complaining about its new Star Wars board game. “Fans will see more Rey product hitting store shelves this month”. Annie continued in her letter.
Hasbro responded in a tweet of its own two days later.
The letter was published on Twitter by Annie’s mother Carrie Goldman.
In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, Hasbro explained Rey wasn’t included in the original release of the official Monopoly tie-in “to avoid revealing a key plot line” before the film premiered.
“A huge number of the messages I’m getting are from men”.
Now all of the fans who were asking #WhereIsRey have their answer: Park Place and Boardwalk, kicking her co-stars’ asses.
eBayA Rey action figure released 9/4/2015. It’s unclear if this is in response to the criticism or if they always planned to release an updated version in 2016.
