Star Wars: The Force Awakens is building more than just holiday cheer at the box office.
On Christmas day the news editor for a UK-based Star Wars fansite called Jedi News tweeted a suggestion for the next Star Wars movie, saying that “Path of the Jedi” would make a proper name for the yet-untitled film. It broke yet another record previously set by Jurassic World, which crossed the $1 billion mark in 13 days. Interestingly, the Christmas weekend turned out to be the best second weekend for the film.
As the AP reported, Jurassic World was released in China, which gave it a significant boost in profits, as China is the second largest movie market.
The worldwide box office is feeling the power of the Force.
The Force Awakens doesn’t open in China till January 9.
This Christmas weekend saw a raft of new titles hitting screens, contributing to a record setting $300 million-plus draw. Disney says Star Wars has brought in $440.4 million in domestic sales domestically and $449.9 internationally.
Paramount’s comedy film “Daddy’s Home”, starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, came in the second place in North America box office this weekend, which took in 38.8 million dollars in its first weekend showings at 3,271 theaters.
“This would have been a respectable opening weekend for ‘Star Wars, ‘” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Rentrak.
Meanwhile, David O. Russell’s “Delight” was in the third position, found to an estimated Dollars 17.5 million from 2,896 theaters. “We know anecdotally there are people who are seeing the movie three and four times”.
