“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” breaks more box office records
As it developed over the course of a couple of years, Star Wars: The Force Awakens went through many changes.
Last weekend, The Force Awakens took the opening weekend box office record away from Jurassic World with $247.9M – $39M more than the previous record.
Internationally, the film added $27.5 million on Friday for a global total of $76.8 million for the day.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens has now earned $440.4 million in North America and $449.9 million overseas for a worldwide total of $890.3 million.
Disney will finish 2015 in second place in domestic market share behind Universal, which has already hit $2.4 billion, thanks to “Jurassic World” at $652.7 million, “Furious 7” at $353 million and “Minions” at $336 million. And now The Force Awakens is aiming to beat Jurassic World’s biggest second weekend record of $106M.
With China yet to see the movie open, many movie buffs and industry insiders are holding their breath to see whether or not JJ Abrams’ take on George Lucas’ franchise will be a reasonable challenger to James Cameron’s earth-shattering box office giant, Avatar, when it comes to final sales figures.
THR reported that the “The Force Awakens”, which stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver and Harrison Ford, could earn $35 million-$47 million on Christmas Day, which would easily surpass the $24.6 million opening of “Sherlock Holmes” on December 25, 2009 to nab the biggest Christmas Day revenue of all time.
