‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ by the numbers
The White House has caught Star Wars mania.
While Star Wars brought in an out-of-this-world $517 million (£347 million) on its opening weekend, Jurassic World drew in $525 million (£352 million) in sales in June, crowning it the biggest box office opening ever.
“Jurassic World” previously held the record for global launch with $524.9 million.
At the top of that list is of course the highest opening weekend for a film ever with an estimated $238 million.
“The Force Awakens” scored the biggest opening weekend in key markets including Britain ($48.9 million, four-day), Germany ($27.3 million), Australia ($18.9 million) and Russian Federation ($12.3 million).
It isn’t all doom and gloom: the film did manage the biggest North American debut of all time, according to studio estimates.
The highly anticipated seventh installment of the space saga has blazed a record-setting trail since its domestic debut last Thursday, taking the prize for highest-grossing domestic opening night with $57 million and biggest domestic single-day sales Friday with $120.5 million.
The Force Awakens made $57m (£38m) on Thursday night, beating the previous record of $43.5m held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. “However, at the time, we thought it was because we saw the movie fast forwarded and believed it to be spoilers”.
Film critics may not weigh in on the latest “Star Wars” film until early Wednesday, but celebrity guests at the Hollywood premiere are already flooding the social media galaxy with praise for “The Force Awakens”.
