‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ hurtles toward becoming biggest domestic film ever
After a gross of $88.3 million in its third weekend, the domestic total for Walt Disney Co.’s “The Force Awakens” stands at $740.3 million – about $10 million shy of “Avatar’s” gross in the USA and Canada.
Nothing, short of a world-destroying laser bomb, can stop Star Wars from ascending to the top spot, and I guess the next question is whether it will become the first film with a lifetime gross of $1 billion domestic dollars. In addition, it’s expected to pass Cameron’s Avatar at some point in the next day or two to become the #1 highest-grossing film of all-time in the U.S.
Internationally, Star Wars earned $US96.3 million on the weekend, boosting its global total to $US184.6 million. Having already set records for an opening weekend, a movie in its second weekend of release and now third weekend of release, it may not be too early to think about what other records The Force Awakens can break.
The latest installment of Lucasfilm’s “Star Wars” sci-fi franchise, directed by J.J. Abrams, made the record in just 17 days, helping it secure second place in all-time box office takings in North America.
With the first weekend of 2016, the great box office money train ride concludes for another year. The film has made $61.7 million in three weeks of release, putting it ahead of Fey and Poehler’s previous teaming on “Baby Mama”, which made $60.5 million during its run in 2008. If Sunday projections lowball the actual amount, than Star Wars would claim the largest weekend for both January and December. In third place was Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, which jumped from limited release to wide with 2,474 theatres.
“Avatar” was the only movie ever to gross $700M… until now. Finally, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 held on in the charts, falling to 10th with $4.6 million and $274.2 million to date. With a 30% dip in attendance, the $105 million action drama grossed $6.8 million, bringing its domestic total to $22.4 million so far.
