‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Smashes Christmas Box Office Record
Traditionally on Christmas Eve, box office results tend to be smaller but this is still an impressive showing for Star Wars. The overall Friday number will easily surpass the previous top Christmas box office in 2009 ($86 million), when Sherlock Holmes opened and Avatar was in its second weekend. In its first week of release, the film has taken in $391.1 million at the domestic box office, breaking the opening week domestic record by close to a hundred million.
In addition to its week record, The Force Awakens also broke the record for the biggest Christmas Day gross of all time.
“The Force Awakens” set a Christmas Day record in the USA with $49.3 million, lifting its domestic total to $440.4 million after eight days.
The global total for “The Force Awakens” has hit $449.9 million for a worldwide total of $890.3 million.
