Starlin Castro’s slam leads Yankees over Indians 13-7
NOTES: Yankees 1B Mark Teixeira discussed his decision to retire at the end of the season during an emotional 20-minute pregame press conference. Sadly, his career became ravaged by injury, and he felt it was time to say goodbye.
Andrew Miller didn’t have to wait long before coming back to Yankee Stadium.
Mark Teixeira probably needed a few more memorable moments, especially in the postseason, to be remembered as a legendary Yankee.
“When you talk about Cleveland, everyone talks about how well their pitching has been this year”, Girardi said.
“I’ll miss hitting the home run”, he said.
Below, you can enjoy all the broadcast calls of Teixeira and Damon’s homers.
Pedro Alvarez, Orioles: With two more home runs against the White Sox Friday, “El Toro” has five homers over his last three games.
“It’s an unbelievable honor to put the pinstripes on every day”, said Teixeira. With Hank Blalock the incumbent third baseman, Teixeira was moved to first base so the Rangers could get his bat in the lineup. While walking to the dugout, Robles barked at Teixeira.
“I think, fortunately, I’ve been through it before, I got traded at the deadline some years back”, Miller said of transitioning from NY to Cleveland. Most younger fans will remember him as a player that always seemed to be injured, but early in his career he was one of the more productive first basemen in the game. Teixeira, as you are taught since little league, continued around the bases with two outs as Luis Catillo dropped a sure game-ending out.
Miller signed a $36 million, four-year contract with the Yankees before the 2015 season, saved 36 games, then was bumped back to the eighth inning for much of this year after the Yankees acquired Aroldis Chapman from Cincinnati.
After all, Teixeira was more driven than perhaps anyone knew.
Cleveland lost for the fourth time in five games, its AL Central lead over second-place Detroit was cut to two games.
The home run settled what was a wild back and forth affair, with the Twins jumping out to a 3-0 lead.
The Tigers scored their ninth victory in 10 games by beating the Mets 4-3, with Victor Martinez getting a home run and pitching ace Justin Verlander limiting NY to four hits in six innings. That’s on pace to reach 30 home runs and 100+ RBI.
Teixeira began the 2010 season batting a dismal.136 in April, and came out his slump in a big way in Fenway Park against Boston.
It was the first time a Yankee went deep three times in one game in Fenway Park since Lou Gehrig in 1927.
While the final score suggested a back-and-forth slugfest, the Yankees’ ability to jump out to insurmountable leads – they led 6-0 in the third and 11-4 after the seventh – against a doubly unsafe Indians team had manager Joe Girardi pleased.
In 2008, in fact, at the age of 28, Teixeira hit.308 with a.410 on-base percentage and a.962 OPS. Later, Padilla would accuse Teixeira of prejudice toward Latinos, which Teixeira denied, calling the comments “comedy”.
Kipnis, Davis, Francisco Lindor and Carlos Santana all had two hits apiece for Cleveland. He doesn’t hit for the best average, have the best power, or contribute the most on the basepaths. In Game Two of the 2009 ALDS, after a dramatic game tying homer by Alex Rodriguez, Teixeira stepped up in the 11th and smoked a deep line drive to left, which struck the top of the wall and ended up in the seats, sparking mayhem in the Bronx. But the Yankees increased their lead to 7-3 and chased Tomlin in the bottom of the inning, when Sanchez collected his first RBI via a double to center that scored Castro. They eventually swept the series and went on to win their 27th World Series.
