Stars come out for European premiere of Edgar Wright’s ‘Baby Driver’
Ansel Elgort can do everything.
Amid all the high-speed action, this “Baby” is also spiked with humor.
Wright wanted a genuine young person to play Baby.
Director Edgar Wright (left) and Ansel Elgort on the set of TriStar Pictures’ BABY DRIVER. So if you’re not fully hooked within the first five minutes, give this excellent film just a little longer to win you over. The two stars alongside a group of bank robbers spearheaded by their mysterious leader Doc (Kevin Spacey), the gun-slinging badass Bats (Jamie Fox) and their musically driven getaway driver, Baby (Ansel Elgort).
Edgar Wright, whose new film Baby Driver opens in cinemas across the United Kingdom next week, descended upon London’s Leicester Square last night for the European premiere of the movie, along with some of the huge cast of the film. And the clever incorporation of music into the narrative makes this film very interesting.
There’s also sci-fi horror flick “Collider”, which Edgar started working on with fellow filmmaker J.J. Abrams in 2012, which the star says is also “in the mix”, but development has been slow because it’s an “ambitious idea”.
For each elaborate heist, Baby’s handler Doc (Kevin Spacey) assembles a different team of experts. I did four or five stunts. I was able to do the one where I gave the lady back her purse, I did the auto trick. So they didn’t have to worry about Lily being there. It sounds like what would happen if someone made a peanut butter-and-ketchup sandwich, but all you have to do is give Wright’s twisted sense of filmmaking a few moments and the contradictions become things of beauty.
Already described by some as the film of the summer, critics have heaped praised on the genre-dodging project, which also stars Jamie Foxx and Jon Hamm.
Memo to James Bond franchise moguls: Edgar Wright is available and interested in directing episodes.
“Yeah, well, at first we just talked about music in general”.
I just wish it had a tiny bit more content.
To make it even clearer, the original script was distributed on an iPad that had little icons that the reader could click to hear the song that would be playing at that point in the movie.
Wright has every reason to feel upbeat. I’ll this, I’ll that.’ I just kept asking, asking, asking. “I didn’t know what I was preparing for, but I started in dance and took so many singing and dancing lessons”. And eventually, they finally said fine, you can have one. “I used to listen to music from a very early age”. Wright concurs: “As a screenwriter, I don’t care for people improvising around the lines too much”. Making this movie was a blast. “These guys are as passionate about auto stunts as Edgar is about directing, or as we are about acting”. I think that’s where the passion for musical theatre comes from. It’s a book that I really enjoyed and there’s a good screenplay and stuff. And I’m gonna be performing!
“Musical theater was the real deal”, Elgort says, “but I really did get into the power of the stillness in a drama”. I think my average fan on social media is 90% 19-year-old girls, because of the movie I was in.
“I’ve seen them on screen but I hadn’t seen them behind the scenes and seen how they prepped”.
