Stars ‘over the moon’ over Golden Glove nominations
Kate Winslet, best supporting actress for “Steve Jobs”: “I am completely over the moon and feel so honoured to be nominated for a Golden Globe by the HFPA for this film”.
The nominees for best drama series include only Fox’s breakout hit “Empire” among broadcast networks, plus USA’s “Mr. Robot”, Netflix’s “Narcos”, Starz’ “Outlander” and “Game of Thrones” on HBO. The nominations were announced Thursday by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which will name the winners at a ceremony on January 10. Nods for its two stars, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, as well as for Haynes’ direction, lent a boost to the film’s growing Oscar outlook.
Seattle-based Amazon proved itself a major player in the television space when its original program “Transparent” won the Golden Globe earlier this year for best TV series, musical or comedy and star Jeffrey Tambor won best actor. Aside from “Carol“, which leads the nominees with five nods, “The Big Short” is close behind with four.
The film will compete against “Spotlight“, “The Revenant”, “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Room” for best motion picture drama. PBS’ “Downton Abbey”, CBS’ “The Good Wife”, Netflix’s “House of Cards” were all Globe drama series nominees last year, but not this year.
If that is the case, Todd Haynes’ “Carol”, about two women in love in 1950’s NY, is Oscar bound in many categories. In totality, the streaming service giant earned nine Global Globe nominations, among which one was in a film category – the first time for Netflix.
Alicia Vikander, best actress nominee for “The Danish Girl” and best supporting actress nominee for “Ex Machina”: “To be considered amongst all these brilliant actresses and their outstanding performances is such an honour”. One original series from Hulu – Casual – also earned a nomination for Best Musical or Comedy Series. And Al Pacino’s nomination for “Danny Collins”, a movie I can’t even remember was ever screened for critics, is just out of left field. After SAG announced its baffling nominations on Wednesday, which snubbed numerous perceived frontrunners, the Golden Globes nominees on Thursday were not as shocking.
Steve Carrell and Ryan Gosling in Wall Street comedy The Big Short.
For best actor in a drama, the nominees are Cranston, Redmayne, Leonardo DiCaprio for “The Revenant”, Michael Fassbender for “Steve Jobs” and Will Smith for “Concussion”, a story about a pathologist who diagnosed degenerative brain disease in American football players.
Streaming series from Netflix, Amazon and Hulu dominated the TV side of the Globes, which scattered nominations across the dial. Six shows tied for the most nominations at three: “Fargo”, “Mr. Robot”, “Outlander”, “Transparent”, “American Crime” and “Wolf Hall”.
It was nearly a given that the film’s cast would be nominated for best ensemble. But instead, the Globes awarded the AARP slots in the category to Maggie Smith (“Lady in the Van”) and Lily Tomlin (“Grandma”). Until now, it was getting tons of attention at smaller award shows.
