State investigates new Zika case outside Miami neighborhood

Three additional people have been reported to have contracted the Zika virus in ongoing outbreak centered in northern Miami, bringing the total number of those infected to 25, the Florida Health Department said today.

Rebecca Gilman said it is Canada’s second case of maternal-to-fetal transmission of the virus, which has been linked to serious birth defects that include microcephaly, where babies are born with abnormally small heads and underdeveloped brains to mothers who were infected while pregnant.

While Wynwood is still an active transmission area of Zika, four blocks in the Southwest corner of the impacted zone have been cleared, the health department announced, meaning no active transmission of the virus is taking place in that area of the neighborhood.

This case is particularly troubling because Zika is more risky for pregnant women because it can damage the development of the brain of a fetus. Infants infected with the Zika virus before birth also can have eye defects, hearing loss and impaired growth.

There have been no cases of Zika virus transmitted through mosquitoes in the state of Ohio.

The Williams County Health Department is reporting the county’s first case of Zika virus in a returning traveler – a 32-year-old Williams County woman returning from Jamaica.
