State officials conclude investigation of Reps. Courser and Gamrat, refer to
Back home, constituents say neither Courser nor Gamrat was a visible presence in the districts they were elected to represent, nor did they deliver the kind of services constituents had come to expect from their state legislators.
We could hardly imagine another conclusion, after a former Courser aide secretly taped the lawmaker planning to distribute an inflammatory e-mail accusing himself of patronizing male prostitutes, a faux-smear campaign designed to distract from his affair with Gamrat.
7 Action News has learned the House business office investigation into the sex and cover-up scandal involving State Reps.
Cotter’s office says the full report will be made public after outside legal counsel has a chance to review it. But Michigan Democratic Party Chair Brandon Dillon says the public shouldn’t have to wait.
“Asking an outside counsel to review the report is a normal process to protect the privacy and confidentiality of affected individuals and ensure compliance with Human Resources regulations”, Bowlin said.
“I have received a draft report to review, and there is troubling evidence of misconduct. I’m directing my authorized counsel to evaluation the preliminary findings for the needs of any additional disciplinary actions”.
Courser, of Lapeer, and Gamrat, of Plainwell, both are married to other people.
Last week, the House voted to form a committee to investigate Courser and Gamrat’s fitness for office in the wake of the sex scandal.
A public summary of the report should be disclosed by the end of the week after an independent reviewer classifies personal information and evidence that could be compromised if revealed at this time.
The move potentially could result in discipline if officials find they misused taxpayer resources to hide an extramarital affair. The six-member panel would have four House Republicans and two House Democrats.
Graham refused to send the email, telling Courser in a text message that he would not help him cover it up. About one week later, Courser and Gamrat gave Graham and their dual Chief of Staff Keith Allard 6 percent pay raises, the maximum annual increase allowed, according to House records.
Both have apologized, but have refused to resign.
