State Police educate and inform during Domestic Violence Awareness Month
The Carl Hayden Community High School student’s black-and-white “End Abuse” is a pencil-drawn demand for a termination of domestic violence.
Domestic violence is defined as “a variety of behaviors or tactics that are used to control another person in an intimate relationship”, according to the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence.

So we hold our vigils each October in Bridgeport, Fairfield, Easton, Monroe, Trumbull and Stratford, to shed much needed light on the disturbing fact that far too many victims of domestic violence are suffering in silence.
As the YWCA seeks ways to increase its ability to help more victims, a new 14-room shelter plans to begin accepting referrals from Harbor House and St. Anthony Family Shelter next week, with another 24 rooms slated to be available over the coming months and 20 more in 2018.

Domestic violence is not a private issue. Because abuse can happen to anyone, there is no typical victim. However, in one day alone, approximately 11,000 requests for emergency services from victims go unmet and unresolved because of a lack of resources, often because of cuts in public funding.
