State trooper fatally shoots suspect outside Frederick Sheetz gas station
A Maryland State Police trooper with the aviation unit shot and killed a man Monday morning in the Frederick area, authorities said.
The man then got out of the SUV, and according to witness accounts cited by police, he refused to show his hands before he quickly lunged at Jansen, who opened fire. When the trooper called in the information about the SUV, he learned that it had been stolen in an armed robbery Sunday night in Baltimore, he said.
The Frederick News-Post reports (http://bit.ly/1KAIfLg ) that police spokesman Sgt. Marc Black says a trooper was involved in a shooting at the gas station, but he did not give any details about the circumstances.
Officials say it happened at the Sheetz gas station on E. Patrick Street. When the trooper came back outside, he noticed an SUV and chose to run its license plate number.
The driver of the SUV jumped out of the vehicle before it stopped moving, and the two troopers approached him on foot. Instead, the man accelerated toward the street and rammed into a responding Frederick police officer’s cruiser as it pulled up.
Police said the suspect got out of the vehicle and a trooper fired.
Shipley says it’s unknown how many shots were fired, but he says it was multiple shots.
TFC Jansen and another State Police flight paramedic who arrived at the scene provided immediate emergency care. Frederick County emergency medical services personnel responded to assist, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man’s identity was withheld, pending notification of his relatives. “Evidence indicates that at this point, that the suspect drove the vehicle, the Navigator, directly into the side of that Frederick Officer, ramming that vehicle in a deliberate attempt to disable that officer”, says Shipley. The case is under investigation.
The injured officer was transported to a local hospital and is expected to recover. His condition was not immediately known.
