State unemployment rate dips to 5.7 %
The October unemployment rate was down from 6.5 percent in September, posting its lowest level since April 2008, according to figures from the state Employment Development Department.
Napa County has the fifth lowest unemployment rate for the state, the EDD said.
The national unemployment dropped slightly to 5 percent, from 5.1 percent last month.
Monroe County continues to have the lowest unemployment rate in the state at 3.4 percent with St. Johns County on the First Coast as the next lowest at 3.6 percent. Nationally, employers added 271,000 jobs in October, the most this year. Year over year, the industry adding the most jobs is professional and business services, which is up by 49,700 jobs. Escambia County went from 5.2% to five even; Santa Rosa 4.6 to 4.4%, and Okaloosa County dropped from 4.4 to 4.2%. The over-the-year percentage decreases occurred in North Dakota (-2.1 percent), West Virginia (-1.8 percent), and Louisiana (-0.5 percent). Manufacturing posted the largest decreases on a numerical basis, down 3,000 jobs (a 0.2 percent decrease).
California led the nation with 41,200 new jobs last month, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. We like the unemployment rate to be around four percent.
Other highlights from the jobs report include: 200 jobs added in financial activities, 900 jobs lost in leisure and hospitality, and 600 jobs lost in construction. That was down from 4.4 percent in September and 4.7 percent a year ago.
Farming represents the fourth-largest industry for employment in the county, behind government (including federal, state and local agencies as well as state colleges and universities and public schools), trade/transportation/utilities, and private-sector education and health services. Vallejo at 7.6 percent and Rio Vista at 11.2 percent complete the list. Overall, 40 states plus Washington, D.C., saw employment gains in October, nine states saw declines and DE was the same. There were 49,616 continued claims in October, down from 57,687 the previous month and down from 66,959 in October 2014.
