Statement from IL House Speaker Madigan on School Funding
The Senate voted 38-13 to send the measure to Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, who has said he’ll sign it quickly to get money to districts starting a new school year. The bill, sponsored by State Senator Tom Cullerton, potentially could save IL rental dealers millions of dollars in use tax obligations.
Monday is decision day for thousands of students who applied for spots at Chicago’s selective-enrollment and magnet elementary and middle schools.
Similar laws have been passed or enacted in Alaska, California, Colorado, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Georgia, Rhode Island, Vermont, and West Virginia.
That said, the scale of the Democratic supports suggests the next time control of Capitol Hill changes hands, we may see some real movement on this.
The new version of the bill includes language that ensures that it’s compliant with the Real ID Law, which screens out non-citizens and ensures that only legal IL residents will be registered.
“I think right now I would say the mood is one of patience and waiting to what’s going to happen”. “That’s more than the federal government has done”. The former businessman has avoided talking about national issues such as immigration, particularly when it comes to Trump.
Supporters say it’ll modernize the system and improve turnout.
The bills would allow people to opt out if they did not wish to register, and would do away with the current process where people wishing to register to vote must first fill out a form with their local elections officers.
“It may reduce some of our time for verifying the records”, he said.
Even though Rauner’s office said in May he meant to decide on the legislation, he had been largely silent on it since then.
“It makes the possibility of separation a reality”, Hernandez said. For part-time or seasonal workers under 18 years old, the increase would have been to $12 an hour. “We’ve been trying to help pass this bill for years; now that it will finally become law, it’s a very rewarding feeling”.
“Detentions could tear families apart and devastate communities”, Tally said. Still, he said, the district is hopeful of a solution. One passed by the Carbondale City Council in April declared the city a “safe and welcoming community” for all residents, regardless of religion, ethnicity or immigration status.
After months of deliberating over what to do with the so-called Illinois TRUST Act, the first-term Republican signaled last week that he would approve the measure, which effectively ends the practice of honoring Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention requests – commonly known as “detainers” – unless they are backed by a criminal warrant.
Under the Illinois Trust Act, law enforcement officials would not arrest someone on the basis of suspecting that the person is an undocumented immigrant. “There are very severe immigration consequences”, Kang said.
IL also has a new law on the books the governor says will help police focus more on crime reduction.
Some progressive Democrats, as well as several other unions like the Illinois Education Association, positioned themselves against the bill, denouncing it as an effort to create a statewide voucher program.
