Staub has heart attack during flight
Mets great Rusty Staub is recovering after suffering a heart attack on a flight to New York.
Staub, 71, is now resting at an Ireland hospital.
Staub was traveling on a flight from Ireland to John F. Kennedy worldwide Airport in New York on Thursday when he had a medical emergency, according to the Mets.
The crew reported contacted air traffic controllers at Shannon and advised them that a passenger on board had suffered a suspected heart attack.
“Rusty and his family ask that we respect his privacy during this period”, the Mets said in a statement.
Rusty Staub, first came to play for the Expos in their inaugural season in 1969 and quickly became a fan favorite not only for his brilliant plays but his willingness to learn French.
Staub was inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame in 1986 and is active in the club’s charitable contributions.
A man named Stephen Marro, who says he’s a personal friend of the Staub family, started the page on Friday with the goal to raise the full $60,000 to pay for the medical plane.
Staub had two stints with the Mets – one from 1972 to 1975, and another from 1981 to 1985 – and, in 1975, broke the Mets record for RBIs in a season, with 105.
As of yesterday afternoon, Marro had raised over $3,500.
