Steelers beat Browns 28-12, slide into AFC playoffs
The Browns, on the other hand, could not touch Roethlisberger. They won six of their past eight games. Take the Cardinals, winners of 9 straight games, to win this one, but take Seattle to beat the spread and keep this close. Roethlisberger threw a touchdown pass to Heath Miller, but the Steelers also lost two turnovers in that quarter. Karlos Dansby forced a fumble on Pittsburgh’s first possession and Jordan Poyer intercepted Roethlisberger at the end of the first quarter. Roethlisberger is attempting way more passes this season than ever before and his injuries could have a lot to do with his interceptions. Quarterback Ryan Mallett in his second Ravens start passed for 292 yards and a touchdown but also had a pair of interceptions.
The Steelers deserve what they get today – whether a pass into the playoffs (and a likely rematch at Cincinnati next weekend) or by sitting them out for the third time in the past four years. He threw for 379 yards and three touchdowns in his first game against the Browns this season. Pryor was released at the end of training camp by the Browns, who signed him following a rash of injuries at the position.
Facing a second-and-10 from the Browns’ 17-yard line, Brown split double coverage from Cleveland’s secondary and used his positioning on the inside slant to give Roethlisberger a window to throw the ball, and the veteran quarterback threaded the needle for his second passing touchdown of the game. But the Browns lost two yards on the next play while again trying to run around right end, and settled for a 29-yard field goal from kicker Travis Coons. It was their 18th defeat in the last 21 games.
The Browns scored a total of three points off of the three turnovers created by the defense after starting drives in Pittsburgh territory.
What a crashing together of all the forces that needed to crash together – with absolute perfection – for the Pittsburgh Steelers to elongate the season into the postseason. We already forecasted the Jets losing, and here, we’re forecasting the Steelers winning, covering the spread and blowing out the Browns.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have clinched a spot in the National Football League play-offs after they beat the Cleveland Browns in the final week of the regular season while the New York Jets were defeated.
Perhaps the biggest factor in Pittsburgh’s success stemmed from their ability to control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Ben Roethlisberger threw for 215 yards in 24 of 34 passes. Cleveland was unable to get any push on the defensive side, and in form with the rest of the season, Danny Shelton was a big non-factor.
It was not Manziel under center for the Browns today, it was Austin Davis.
Blake Bortles threw for 239 yards with two interceptions for the Jaguars (5-11).
Taking into consideration that Davis was only used in any situation midway through the season, it would be unfair to expect him to come in and be the leader of this team. Who will win this game?
Until Roethlisberger and Brown imposed their collective will on the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, with Roethlisberger completing 24 of 36 passes for 240 yards and Brown catching 13 passes for 187 yards, Brady was the only AFC quarterback in these playoffs who had ever been to a Super Bowl.
