Steelers’ Cam Heyward sticking with tribute to late father
The Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman was fined over ,000 for wearing eye black strips dedicated to his father against the San Diego Chargers in Week 5.
In October, the NFL allows league-approved pink accessories for NFL players, coaches and officials to raise awareness for breast cancer. “I’m not going to shy away from the fight against cancer, and I’m going to support them in any way possible”.
In its op-ed, the Daily Beast railed against how the National Football League seems to be ignoring bigger problems than minor uniform violations, such as domestic violence and the ongoing issue of retired National Football League players suffering from health problems related to head trauma they suffered while still active players.
While the NFL’s insistence on following uniform rules makes for silly PR when it comes to honoring cancer victims, clearly Heyward and Williams are generating great press by honoring loved ones, despite the NFL’s rules.
Last week, Heyward’s teammate, running back DeAngelo Williams, was told by the league he couldn’t wear pink accessories throughout the season to honor his late mother. Outside of that, though, the league doesn’t budge.
Heyward was undeterred by the fine last week and he wore the eye black again against the Arizona Cardinals.
