Steelers linebacker James Harrison will give back trophies sons received for
James Harrison, workout maniac, is not down for rewarding mere participation. There’s no place for them. Harrison posted on his Instagram account Saturday with a picture of two participation trophies his sons won for, as he put it “nothing”.
On Friday, Harrison showed up to his house to discover that his two sons, ages six and eight, had been given participation awards.
Harrison, 37, has vowed to take the hardware back to where it came from until his sons are worthy, explaining: “While I am very proud of my boys for everything they do and will encourage them till the day I die…” As of early Sunday afternoon, his post had garnered almost 1,000 comments, most of which supported his rage against the millennial entitlement.
Taking trophies away from children is a pretty harsh lesson, but with such a passionate set of values, it is no wonder James Harrison has seen such incredible success on the football field. Those trophies that children get simply for showing up and playing, to whatever degree of success, sports. Harrison believes that a trophy should be something you earn by being the best, not something you receive just for trying. If you’re going to compete, you should compete to win and should you not win, you shouldn’t expect a pat on the back or a trophy just because you failed at achieving the ultimate goal.
