Steelers QB Landry Jones expected to start vs. Browns, Johnny Manziel

Gilbert had a strong game last week as he helped keep Raiders standout linebacker Khalil Mack from registering any tackles. He and the Browns will hope to end that drought on Sunday in Pittsburgh.

Just one week after spraining his foot in a victory over Oakland, Roethlisberger had healed sufficiently to participate in enough practice sessions during the week to earn the status as the backup quarterback to the game’s starter, Landry Jones, with Mike Vick being inactive. Pittsburgh wasn’t able to do anything with their opening drive, and resulted in Jordan Berry’s first punt of the afternoon.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have not completely ruled out playing Ben Roethlisberger this weekend. By that point, Roethlisberger had already started warming up and talking to the Steelers’ offensive coaching staff.

Seven plays later Brown turned a short pass from Roethlisberger into a 56-yard touchdown, the All-Pro flipping into the end zone and sticking the landing.

It was just the second time Roethlisberger has entered the game in a reserve role. The second quarter was an entirely different story, as the Steelers took control with big pass after big pass and capitalized on Cleveland’s mistakes.

The Browns got all the way to the Steelers’ 5-yard line midway through the fourth quarter but couldn’t get any farther. Backup Landry Jones likely will get the start when the Steelers host another team with quarterback questions in the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.

Manziel and the Browns offense took over at the Pittsburgh 15-yard line, and Pittsburgh continued to struggle with Manziel’s sandlot style of play.

Fans will remember that Ryan was sacked by the Jets after his six seasons in NY last January, and the win on his return will have been a sweet one. The fumble was the second turnover caused by the Pittsburgh defense on the day. Healthy or on one foot.

The Browns managed only a field goal – that’s three points total in the last two halves – but Manziel seemed committed to throwing from the pocket and made a few nice completions. That may not sound like a tough assignment given their splendid receiving corps of Antonio Brown, Martavis Bryant, Markus Wheaton, Darrius Heyward-Bey and tight end Heath Miller. It was all Steelers all day as they grabbed the victory and stayed alive in the AFC wildcard picture.

One will continue for another year at least: Ben Roethlisberger’s mastery over the Browns. The drive stalled and resulted in a 25-yard Boswell field goal giving Pittsburgh a 24-3 lead with 8:33 left in the third quarter. Of course, the Browns being the Browns, Travis Coons missed the extra point.

The Steelers’ offense should be led largely by DeAngelo Williams this week.

The Panthers (9-0) won their team-record 13th straight regular-season game.

A win for the Steelers would move them to 6-4 and leave them in a much stronger position in the hunt for the Wild Card spot they are aiming for.
