Steelers set an all-time offensive record
“We’re just focused on the guys who are and how we can put together the right mix to be successful, how we can utilize their skills, how we can work to minimize their weaknesses individually and collectively”. “I say ‘I don’t know who [ticked] off the football gods, but they’re definitely letting us have it this year with the injuries”. After two Williams runs, Boswell won the game with his field goal.
Two plays later, Roethlisberger threw a four-yard touchdown pass to James, wide open in the back of the end zone with 11:24 to go. Bell is now out for the season with an injury and Williams, a veteran who many assumed had little left in the tank this year, put up 170 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 27 carries.
The loss drops the Raiders to 4-4 on the season. He ran hard, caught passes and made big plays when the team needed him the most. “That’s why we acqured him back in the spring”.
Carr has 15 touchdowns against only three picks, and last week threw 333 yards with four scores as they defeated the New York Jets 34-20 in Week 8. Crabtree caught two touchdown passes, and rookie Amari Cooper added a score of his own, though Cooper also had a couple of missed connections with Carr that could have turned the game.
Ross Cockrell picked off Carr in the end zone on Oakland’s ensuing possession, but Carr collected himself to tie the game with a pretty strike to Crabtree to knot it at 35. Late in the fourth quarter, Aldon Smith got into the backfield to sack Ben Roethlisberger for the only time in the game. Three plays later, Chris Boswell kicked the Steelers’ winning field goal.
Without adjusting for competition or other factors, here’s what the team’s offense has looked like in games this season in which Roethlisberger hasn’t participated at all. The Steelers went 2-2 in those games but were 2-1 with Michael Vick as the starting quarterback and lost at Kansas City when Jones started. That’s something Oakland’s front office will have to address in the draft and in free agency, though it speaks well to the job general manager Reggie McKenzie has done that the Raiders have built a competitive team out of what was once a depleted roster in so short a time. Facing one of the league’s worst secondaries, it’s no surprise the Steelers threw the ball Antonio Brown’s way a lot, but the back-and-forth pace of the contest resulted in a truly staggering stat line for Brown: 23 targets, 17 catches, 284 yards and … no touchdowns. Walker had by far his best game of the season, catching seven passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns. Murray left the game to be treated for concussion and didn’t return. “It feels great to have him come in and finish the game and help us win”. Sure, you can roll out DeAngelo against Cleveland in Week 10, but the schedule takes a rough turn for the Steelers thereafter: at Seattle, vs. Indy, at Cincinnati, vs. Denver.
Roethlisberger had just returned to the lineup a week earlier after missing four games with a left knee injury. He passed Johnny Unitas for 15th all time in career passing yards early in the game and later passed Joe Montana for 14th. Brown set franchise records with 17 receptions and 285 receiving yards. He broke the receiving marks of 14 catches by Courtney Hawkins in 1998 and 253 yards by Plaxico Burress in 2002. Later in the quarter, Brown had receptions of 5, 16 and 41 yards to key a 78-yard scoring drive.
Heyward-Bey’s return has been upgraded to probable from questionable. Until he took a short pass and zig-zagged 14 yards to an wonderful fourth-quarter touchdown. A few point to a pass defense that is ranked near the bottom of the league, but over the last three weeks, they’ve absolutely handled the likes of Peyton Manning, Philip Rivers – who is the engine that drives the league’s top ranked pass defense – and Ryan Fitzpatrick/Geno Smith.
