Steelers stunned by Ravens in 20-17 loss
Mallett was determined to take advantage of the opportunity and spent countless hours at the team’s practice facility. “We also realize when things are out of your control, they’re just that”. The Jets ended up beating the Patriots, 26-20, in overtime, giving them a one-game lead over Pittsburgh headed into the final week.
“Everybody welcomed me with open arms, so it was an easy transition, and that’s credit to my teammates, said Mallett, who called his release from Houston a ‘dose of humble pie.’ “Jimmy [Clausen] and Matt [Schaub] being unselfish and helping me to understand, because it was a totally new system to me”. “It’s an emotional time, but it’s been fun”. He was also effective taking command of the huddle and did not have any costly turnovers. “This kid was in (the practice facility) 24-7”. “Obviously, Sunday night was bummed, yesterday was pretty bummed, but after you get done watching the film and you have your meetings and you talk about the game, you have to move on”. It certainly became costly on the Steelers push for another touchdown with four minutes left in the game when Upshaw had a big sack on Roethlisberger. “It’s execution”, Allen said. He added that Sunday’s tilt with the Browns is about “getting the stench off us…”
Baltimore and Pittsburgh have one of the fiercest rivalries in the National Football League and this game had plenty of drama.
DeAngelo Williams ran for 100 yards and had six catches for 53 yards, but that wasn’t enough to prevent Pittsburgh’s winning streak in December from ending at 10 games.
“I would imagine if the Jets are winning the game, it’s going to be up quite a bit, because we’ll be in Cleveland’s stadium”, Tomlin said. “To get a win, period, right now, how everything’s been going, is even better”. The Steelers entered the game ranked 31st in pass defense, and they looked the part against a Ravens offense that had trouble scoring for most of the season.
Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger threw two interceptions and was sacked three times.
“We shot ourselves in the foot today, ” Roethlisberger said after the loss. “I think that pressure creates an environment that produces splash for us, whether it’s negative plays for the offense or turnovers”. The Ravens had lost three straight and had dropped back-to-back home games by a combined 69-20. The seven members from the The Sun predicted a 20-point average margin of victory for Pittsburgh.
We didn’t handle the business in the stadium today so we’re left to look around at other stadiums. “With this long, long, long season, the way the ball bounced all year, we were close with a lot of teams”.
The Steelers didn’t get any closer to securing a playoff spot. At this point, Kansas City and the New York Jets (both 10-5) own a better record in the race for the AFC wild card.
But the biggest shocker was the way quarterback Ryan Mallett outplayed Roethlisberger. One week after catching 16 passes for 184 yards against the NFL’s No. 1 defense, receiver Antonio Brown was held to 61 yards on seven catches.
Field goals on two of their next three series staked the Ravens to a 13-3 halftime lead.
“It’s a team loss”, Brown said. You have to have faith, you have to believe, that’s one thing I do, I believe in my guys, I believe in us. It’s us as a whole. But Baltimore had other ideas as they upset the Steelers 20-17. But the defense was still able to grab a pair of interceptions. He did not have a carry…. The defense allowed a reject quarterback who had been signed as a free agent only 12 days earlier to throw for a career-high 28 completions and 274 yards without an interception.
