Stein explains recount push outside Trump Tower
Jill Stein for President Pennsylvania Coordinator Carl Romanelli said “I don’t just mean comparing computer chips, or register tapes, I mean an actual verification of what is in Pennsylvania’s voting machines”.
“The Pennsylvania election system is a national disgrace”.
“Voters are forced to use vulnerable, hackable, antiquated technology banned in other states, then rely on the kindness of machines. There is no paper trail”, Stein said in the complaint.
A spokeswoman for Pennsylvania election officials said they would not comment on pending litigation.
Stein’s critics also argue that her true motivation is to raise money and build a donor database that can be tapped later by her or others in the Green Party. “No issues out of the ordinary”.
State law called for the recount to begin two days after the Board of State Canvassers deadlocked over President-elect Donald Trump’s appeal, effectively allowing the recount to proceed. A margin of 0.5 would trigger an automatic statewide recount.
Clinton won in Nevada, and De La Fuente finished last.
Without Goldsmith’s opinion, the recount would have started late tomorrow or Wednesday at the earliest.
Pennsylvania is not the only state where recount efforts are running into opposition.
The lawsuit was filed Monday morning in Philadelphia against state elections officials. All states must certify election results by December 13.
“There are millions of voters out there who have worries, and they have good reason to be anxious”. The recount turned up no instances of fraud or hacking here, City Commissioner Al Schmidt said, emphasizing the difficulty of hacking voting machines that aren’t connected to the internet.
Celebrating that decision mere steps from Trump Tower, Stein cited concerns over “blank votes” on some ballots.
You read that right, a federal judge nullified state election law and ordered the state to appropriate new funds for a recount that is not required by the state – all on behalf of the fourth-place finisher who should not have standing in federal court as an aggrieved party.
The Green Party began crowdfunding the recount effort the day before Thanksgiving. Members say the first count was an accurate count and that the recount will also show Trump won Wisconsin and Clinton lost Wisconsin. Republican Donald Trump narrowly defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton in all three states on his way to victory. Nine point five million is the new goal post, which Stein says she’ll need every penny of. She said that these blank votes were up 70% on previous years.
On Saturday, the Green Party said it was taking its fight for a recount in Pennsylvania to federal court, with Stein expected to make an announced later on Monday in Manhattan.
Secretary of State officials are hoping to begin posting updated recount results each night, which would be found at the office’s elections website.
The campaign has appealed that issue to Common Pleas Court, and a hearing is set for Tuesday afternoon.
Official figures show Trump defeated Clinton by 10,704 votes in MI, 68,236 in Pennsylvania and 27,257 in Wisconsin.
Despite the fact there’s been no credible evidence so far of election tampering, Stein has maintained in recent interviews – including with CNN – “you can not tell unless you’re actually counting paper votes”.
